As I drove from Swindon along the country road the clouds hung ominously in the sky. Was this a portent of things to come?
Wiltshire Phenomena Research had kindly invited me along to one of their investigations in Devizes. The location reputedly exhibited phenomena in the form of loud bangs, glasses shaking and dark shadows moving across the walls. Other more sinister manifestations had been reported in the cellar, which left me with a feeling of nervous excitement as I drew closer to the location.
After meeting with the members of WPR we decided to split into two teams. Team one, including myself would venture into the cellar while team two stayed in the main bar area. Armed with my trusty camcorder, digital camera and a borrowed torch we made our way into the locations' dark cellar.
The cellar itself felt normal and empty of energy or any presence. Then the big event happened - a loud bang from the first room in the cellar that sent our team rushing to investigate. Team two were contacted and confirmed they had not caused the noise and in fact had also heard it. No one else was in the cellar at the time.
From a personal perspective the rest of the investigation proceeded without incident although other investigators reported creaking noises and a moving shadow where the toilets were. It was not until the last vigil of the night that for the first time I began to feel uncomfortable. I was sat in the dinning room next to a window that looked out into a corridor near the toilets. The same location the dark shadow had been seen earlier on in the investigation!
As we sat in the pitch black a number of incidents occurred. One of the investigators reported being touched, while a light was seen by others to flash around the room. Temperature drops were also reported in a room that had no obvious source of any drafts.
I then sensed I was being watched from outside the window. The feeling grew as I sat motionless until it was so great I was forced to turn to check if anything was in the corridor outside. I expected to see something staring at me, but there was nothing there. The feeling of being watched then passed and the vigil continued without further incident.
In the early hours of the night the investigation ended. We left the location and I drove homd along the back roads towards Swindon.
In the light of day I drew some conclusions about my experiences on the vigil. I stress these are my own thoughts and are not necessarily shared by WPR.
Someone outside, stepping on the chute used to deliver barrels into the cellar, could easily have caused the loud bang. This theory is somewhat compromised by the fact that despite the street outside being quite busy with Saturday night drinkers, the noise was not heard again. But as a counterpoint, most people avoid the metal covers on the pavement.
The feeling of being watched could be attributed to sensory depravation and the fact that at the time I was feeling tired. When starved of stimulus the brain can be quite easily fooled into thinking there is something there, when the reality is that nothing out of the ordinary is occurring.
I would like to give huge thanks to WPR. They welcomed me into their group and I hope I gave something back that night. The team approached the investigation with total professionalism which left me feeling impressed. I felt a genuine warmth for the members of WPR and thoroughly enjoyed the investigation and vigils. I look forward to joining them again for an investigation in Warminster.
